Damn Straight is written by Abigail Garner, creator of FamiliesLikeMine.com and author of Families Like Mine: Children of Gay Parents Tell It Like It Is. Her full biography is available on her website.
The name of the blog, “Damn Straight,” is derived from Abigail’s experience of being cursed at (figuratively and at times, literally) by people who wish that straight people would stay silent on the issue of LGBT rights. When straight-identified people openly support a future of equality, they help erode the myth that only LGBT people care about their rights because they are “special rights.” When straight-identified people speak up, they leverage their heterosexual privilege to re-frame the struggle as one of equal rights.
Abigail also hosts Oversampled, a blog aggregator for the diverse voices of adult children of LGBT parents.
She is currently completing her course work for her master’s degree in Organizational Leadership at the College of St. Catherine and a certificate in dispute resolution from Hamline University. Upon completion of her degree in 2009, her goal is to secure a position in a grantmaking foundation or a not-for-profit organization.
