Go see SiCKO!
One of the most stressful and expensive inequities for gay-parented families is the lack of health care benefits because same-sex couples cannot marry in the U.S.
But same-sex couples and families are only part of the bigger picture of how healthcare fails America. Millions of Americans are uninsured, and millions more are struggling to pay their health care premiums, or when they do get sick, HMOs regularly attempt to find reasons to deny coverage.
Michael Moore’s movie shows alternative possibilities to the flawed US health care system, by traveling to countries with national healthcare programs.
I left the movie with a new awareness of the weight of this collective burden everyone in America carries, save for the very rich.
Moore’s message is not subtle — nor should it be. A nation of our wealth and resources should be able to take care of its people. Marital status, gay or straight, should not be a condition of that care.
