What Is So Strange About Having Loving Parents?

Seventeen-year-old Scout Opatut was the first child in New Jersey to legally have two moms. She was recently featured in the “Fearless Voices” section of the Huffington Post:

“What Is So Strange About Having Loving Parents?”

Scout and one of her mothers, Joan Garry (former ED of GLAAD) are co-blogging at Who’s the Grownup?

Hat tip: Mombian.

On a related note, I’ve noticed that “Scout” seems to be a popular name for lesbian mothers to name their daughters. “Harper” is a popular one, too. I enjoyed To Kill A Mockingbird as much as the next person, but does anyone have any thoughts on why these otherwise unusual names are not uncommon in lesbian parenting circles?

Unless you’re Demi Moore and Bruce Willis, who also have a daughter named Scout . . . what I find fun about the popularity of the name “Scout” is that it isn’t even the character’s actual name — her name was Jean Louise Finch and you don’t find a lot of kids named that!
