Sol to speak at GLSEN Boston

Bay Windows reports that second-gen’er Sol Kelley-Jones will speaking at GLSEN Boston’s 17th annual conference on March 31st.

From Bay Windows:

Kelly-Jones [sic], a queer college student and the child of lesbian moms, made her debut as a political activist at just 10 years old, making headlines in her home state by testifying at a hearing on same-sex marriage. In 1999, at age 12 she founded the Madison chapter of Children of Lesbians and Gays Everywhere (COLAGE), and the next year she addressed a crowd of more than 500,000 people at the Millennium March on Washington, continuing her work speaking out from the perspective of LGBT families. Kelly-Jones [sic] also founded the Madison-based Proud Theater, a theater troupe for LGBT youth, the children of LGBT parents and allies. In 2005 she was awarded a scholarship by the Point Foundation, which provides scholarships to LGBT students who demonstrate high academic achievement and leadership ability.

Sol is a household name in the queerspawn universe. When I was putting the final touches on Families Like Mine, I came across a quote from Sol that I thought would make a perfect epigraph. She granted me permission to use it:

I truly believe that if we put the strength of our hearts and minds together we can change prejudice and my generation will grow up appreciating the glorious rainbow of diversity.

— Sol Kelley-Jones

I figured that for readers who don’t know “who Sol is” they could still appreciate the quote for setting the tone and laying out the vision of my book. And for readers who do know her, they would smile and nod and say, “Yep, that’s 100% Sol.”
