The following is a statement by MassEquality Campaign Director Marc Solomon:

Nothing has changed. The Court rejected our opponents’ demands and said the legislature cannot be compelled to vote to advance an amendment it fundamentally disagrees with. Legislators have not only the freedom, but the responsibility to handle the issue responsibly and vote their conscience.

After 18 substantive votes on marriage equality since the Goodridge decision, it’s time for the legislature to move on to the issues people really care about-like creating higher-paying jobs, improving our schools, and fixing our health care system.

“We urge the legislature to end this debate once and for all and let committed couples and their families get on with their lives.

As a Mass resident, I certainly echo the desire that the legislature move on to other issues. But alas, the news continues to be not good this morning. (Link to Boston Globe story.)

Today, many of us in Mass are happy that Gov. Mitt Romney, who has consistently fought against marriage equality, will finally be leaving the governor’s office. However, as Romney has just filed papers to run for president and plans to declare his candidacy today, I urge voters across the country to be vigilant during the 2008 presidential campaign.
