Families All Matter, including LGBT

aMaze, the organization best known for its Families All Matter Book Project is focusing on LGBT families in its most recent newsletter. They asked me to submit an article about my reflections on inclusive curricula, or in my case, lack thereof.

Excerpt:

Something as simple as a book would have opened the door for me to bring my entire self to school. Instead, I divided my world into two parts: where I felt safe, and where I did not; where I could be myself and where I had to be on my guard. With no cue at my school that the family I came from was “okay,” you get one guess as to how I categorized my classroom in my division of “safe” and “unsafe.”

The newsletter is online as a PDF file. Click on the Fall/Winter 2006 issue on here. My article is on the front page.

I just read your words on the cover of the aMaze December newsletter. Thank you for sharing your thoughts - with such brilliance. I will pass your article on to both family members and colleagues. I appreciate you, the work you have done, and will continue to do (just think of ALL the lives you have touched)! I wish you well in your new journey ahead. Happy Holidays.
