If you haven’t met June Kjome…

…you’re missing out.

The La Crosse Tribune reports that fair-minded citizens are taking the “glass half full” approach regarding the constitutional amendment stripping same-sex couples legal recognition. The loss in La Crosse County was by a mere 152 votes, and organizers say that is worth celebrating.

Featured in the article is June Kjome, a tireless activist for gay rights who happens to be heterosexual — and 85 years old.

“Eventually that amendment is going to be changed,” Kjome, 85, said. “I don’t think I’ll live to see it because I’m too old, but it’s going to happen.”

I had the pleasure of meeting June when I spoke at the first Pride celebration in La Crosse in 2001. She told me about how she was involved with Soulforce and had been recently trained in civil disobedience. When she participates in protests, she stashes a day’s supply of her medications in her bra so she has what she needs if she is arrested. Now that’s commitment!

La Crosse readers, join in the celebration tomorrow. Recharge your batteries, revive your faith in your fellow human beings, and say thanks to June and all the other organizers who carry the LGBT community, even in the most discouraging times.

Just very proud that we are related. She is quite a complex woman, knowledgeable, intelligent and caring.

She is a great woman and admired by myself and my family. I disagree with her on gay rights. It is a lifestyle choice and should not recieve any special treatment.
