Reading at MadWimmin Books, er, Amazon Books
Alison Bechdel was in Minneapolis last night for a reading at Amazon Cooperative Bookstore. She lived in Minneapolis until about 15 years ago. Madwimmin books, the feminist bookstore (since closed) in her strip is based largely on Amazon Bookstore (still open). Here’s her post about the event.
I arrived a half hour early and it was already standing room only. Barb, the store’s manager, began to reassess the space, finding every nook and cranny where a person could fit. She said there was still one seat for anyone who wanted to sit “up front.” I walk up the aisle, to fill this lone seat and it’s not a folding chair like all the others. No, it’s a big ol’ red velvet arm chair with wings right next to the microphone stand where Alison will be presenting. No wonder no one had sat down there yet…it seemed like it was reserved for a princess. So, ahem, I sat down.
From where I was sitting, I quite literally “had her back.”
With 30 minutes left before show time, I had a chance to talk with Alison. Her friend (and writer) Judith Katz took this photo of Alison and me:

She also reports that Fun Home is moving its way up the NYT Bestseller list!
