With the defeat of the marriage amendment in the Senate, LGBT communities have endured another round of pummeling of our collective psyche. Now it’s time to step back and assess the damage.

Have you found yourself feeling extra irritable and angry in the past few days? Imagine what it must be like for the children of gay parents who feel like the debates are direct attacks on them, and whether or not they should even exist.

Do your kids and yourself a favor. Tune in to your families and regroup.

Keep the radio and TV off for a couple days. Opt for CDs and videos instead. Pull out some board games (remember those?). Your family doesn’t need to hear a round-up of the “highlights” from the debates. Kids take those “highlights” very personally, because they attack their parents and the validity of their families.

They don’t need to hear one more word about how evil their parents are.

And it’s not like they haven’t heard this mean-spirited rhetoric a hundred times before.

Terrific idea! I can think of nothing more frightening to young children than to see a smiling President speak out against the validity of their families and then have a room full of important looking people applauding him for for what he is saying!!

It’s amazing how much we hear the same messages over and over throughout the day if we automatically turn on the car radio and keep the radio on all day at work and home. Less background noise is good for children and adults. Let’s all try a little bit of quiet time. I’ve discovered there are many more birds in my neighborhood than I thought there were. And the birds are politically neutral!
