Not a Nerd
Yesterday was my 34th birthday. My mom and dad surprised me with a chair.
A chair at the library, actually. But not just any library. We’re talkin’ the brand spankin’ new, totally-worth-the-wait downtown Minneapolis Public Library. As a fundraiser for the new building, chairs in the auditorium can be sponsored in honor of Minnesota authors. Now my name will be among them. Isn’t that a neat birthday gift?
After touring the place, I think my favorite spot in the library is where I will not be allowed: the teen library/lounge. Walking through the door to a space just for people ages 13-18 reminded me of when I toured a new Mormon temple before it was officially blessed for the “worthy.” Both times, I was fascinated with the space, not just because it was not my world, but because I knew I would never be invited back.
The teen library has a room with floor-to-ceiling “white board.” It’s space for endless and harmless “graffiti.” Here’s one teen’s reaction to the new library, who also speaks for me, yo.

I agree–very cool!
