Queerspawn sighting: Last Comic Standing
Tonight’s auditions/showcase in L.A. for Last Comic Standing featured 20-year-old Kaitlin Colombo. She included material about having a gay dad and how people assume she’s a lesbian.
Kaitlin’s personal website confirms that she really does have a gay dad who raised her as a single parent. “He is a non-practicing Gay,” she writes on her site, “I’m looking for a [boyfriend] for him.”
She didn’t make the cut on Last Comic Standing, but here’s some good news for those of you cruising with R Family Vacations in July: Kaitlin is scheduled to perform. I was invited as an “entertainer” on the cruise in 2004 and 2005 (not comedy! book signings) and I can say first-hand that R Family Vacations picks a great comedy line-up. It’s so much fun to see gay comedians perform when you are with an entire audience that has a queer sensibility.
I wonder how this young straight queerspawn will play to a crowd of queer parents.
Will they be able to laugh at themselves?
UPDATE: Her set has since been uploaded to the NBC website. Go watch it.
I think any parents (queer or not) who can’t laugh at themselves won’t last very long without nervous breakdowns. Witness the lesbian mom’s brain.
