BBC seeks US kids of queers for TV series

Yasmine from My Life as a Child

Today a producer from BBC called me to talk about their plans for producing a U.S. version of “My Life as a Child.”

In the mix, they want a child/ren (ages 7-11) with gay/lesbian parents. The children must have their parents’ permission, but based on the snippets I’ve seen online of the UK series, I really get the sense that after the parents give the go-ahead, the kids are the ones in control of their own story.

Here’s the announcement:

“My Life as a Child” is an extraordinary new television program brought to you by the BBC and TLC. This innovative documentary series aims to capture American life through the eyes of 7-11 year-olds. We train the kids to use the camera and then give them the freedom to decide what to film and what to discuss!

We are seeking children of all backgrounds and personalities from across the U.S. to film a video diary of their lives for approximately three months.

Whether the children film personal video diaries, weekend activities, or family outings, we hope that this project will become a part of their daily routine and an opportunity for the entire family to learn and grow together!

Already a critical success in the UK, the program provides intimate, honest and insightful portraits of family life and childhood in today’s world. Each child takes us on an emotional journey and leaves us with a deeper understanding (and reminder) of what it is to be a child.
