Freedom to Marry Week
It’s no surprise that in his State of the Union address, Bush included a reference, albeit a brief one, to the “concern” that “many” Americans have regarding marriage equality. But Bush doesn’t use the words “marriage equality” — in his universe, “activist judges” are out to “redefine” marriage.
In nearly the same breath, Bush has the nerve to evoke the legacies of Abraham Lincoln and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Bush may have chosen less-pointed language this year than he has used in previous Addresses regarding his homo-hostile policies, but he is no less committed to promoting legalized discrimination against LGBT individuals and their loved ones. February — the month of Valentine’s Day — is a great time to organize and counter his anti-gay rhetoric.
Since 1998, Freedom to Marry has used Valentine’s Day as the ideal opportunity to heighten awareness about marriage equality.
