The New York Times Expands its “Weddings” Section
On September 1, 2002, The New York Times published their first announcement of a same-sex commitment celebration. The first couple announced, Daniel Gross and Steven Goldstein, had a civil union ceremony in Vermont. The “Weddings” section was renamed “Weddings/Celebrations.”
Joan M. Garry, Executive Director of GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) said that NYT’s decision is “nothing less than a watershed moment in the pursuit of equality for the lesbian and gay community.” (GLAAD press release, 8/18/02)
Robert Dodge, president of NLGJA (National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association) echoed Garry’s sentiments, saying, “The Times decision is historic. This decision will stand as a beacon for other major news organizations which are also eager to maintain fairness and equity in their coverage of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community.” (NLGJA press release, 8/19/02)
GLAAD is maintaining an online list of newspapers that print announcements for same-sex commitment ceremonies.
