A little bit of rainbow says a lot.
Dignity, a lay movement of LGBT Catholics, families, and friends, began Solidarity Sunday in 1995 to make visible their opposition to anti-gay violence. Solidarity Sunday is always the Sunday before National Coming Out Day (October 7, 2001). Other Christian denominations have also adopted the tradition of Solidarity Sunday in both formal and informal ways.
If you are a member of a church that is not officially participating, the simplest action you can take is to “come out” against anti-gay violence by wearing a piece of rainbow ribbon. Even if just one person in the congregation asks you about it, it will be an opportunity to get one more person thinking about anti-violence and human dignity for all people.
And if no one asks you about it, it’s very likely that someone who has yet to come out probably noticed and now know s/he has an ally within your spiritual community.
