“That’s so gay!”

To the Students at St. Andrew’s School:

You made it to the website! Thanks for checking it out. From what you all have told me, my talk at your school was one of the few times gay issues have been discussed at your school. Thank you for the warm reception and the follow-up emails.

I heard so many interesting stories at the reception. Students who are questioning their own sexuality, others who have a gay relative or friend, others who really want to be visible allies but aren’t really sure how to take action at a boarding school.

Over half of you raised your hands when I asked if you hear this derogatory expression at your school on a daily basis. (Unfortunately, this is common in high schools.) Most people who use the expression don’t mean to be disrespectful, they just don’t think about how it might offend or hurt people.

As you know, a pair of jeans might be out of style, but they can’t really be “gay.” Not doing well on a test doesn’t make the test “gay.” And a song on the radio might be boring, but not “gay.”

How would the climate at SAS change if everyone made a commitment to find more accurate words rather than describing things as “gay?”

What struck me most, was how so many of you welcomed the chance to simply start talking about addressing prejudice and creating supportive environments. I am inspired by your enthusiasm!

I hope St. Andrew’s continues to gain momentum in addressing ways to make your community — your family away from home — a place were no one has to worry about hiding who they are.
